چکیده

Abstract. We consider a class nonlinear Schrödinger / Gross-Pitaevskii equations (NLS/GP) with a focusing (attractive) nonlinear potential and symmetric double well linear potential. NLS/GP plays a central role in the modeling of nonlinear optical and mean-field quantum many-body phenomena. It is known that there is a critical L norm (optical power / particle number) at which there is a symmetry breaking bifurcation of the ground state. We study the rich dynamical behavior near the symmetry breaking point. The source of this behavior in the full Hamiltonian PDE is related to the dynamics of a finite-dimensional Hamiltonian reduction. We derive this reduction, analyze a part of its phase space and prove a shadowing theorem on the persistence of solutions, with oscillating mass-transport between wells, on very long, but finite, time scales within the full NLS/GP. The infinite time dynamics for NLS/GP are expected to depart, from the finite dimensional reduction, due to resonant coupling of discrete and continuum / radiation modes.

Geometric Analysis of Bifurcation and Symmetry Breaking in a Gross–Pitaevskii Equation

Gross–Pitaevskii and nonlinear Hartree equations are equations of nonlinear Schrödinger type that play an important role in the theory of Bose–Einstein condensation. Recent results of Aschbacher et al. (3) demonstrate, for a class of 3-dimensional models, that for large boson number (squared L norm), N, the ground state does not have the symmetry properties of the ground state at small N. We pr...

Symmetry-Breaking Bifurcation in Nonlinear Schrödinger/Gross-Pitaevskii Equations

We consider a class of nonlinear Schrödinger / Gross-Pitaveskii (NLS-GP) equations, i.e. NLS with a linear potential. We obtain conditions for a symmetry breaking bifurcation in a symmetric family of states asN , the squared L2 norm (particle number, optical power), is increased. In the special case where the linear potential is a doublewell with well separation L, we estimate Ncr(L), the symme...

Dynamics of Nonlinear Schrödinger /Gross-Pitaevskii Equations; Mass Transfer in Systems with Solitons and Degenerate Neutral Modes

Nonlinear Schrödinger / Gross-Pitaevskii equations play a central role in the understanding of nonlinear optical and macroscopic quantum systems. The large time dynamics of such systems is governed by interactions of the nonlinear ground state manifold, discrete neutral modes (“excited states”) and dispersive radiation. Systems with symmetry, in spatial dimensions larger than one, typically hav...

Normal form for the symmetry-breaking bifurcation in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Article history: Received 7 February 2012 Available online 13 August 2012 We derive and justify a normal form reduction of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a general pitchfork bifurcation of the symmetric bound state that occurs in a double-well symmetric potential. We prove persistence of normal form dynamics for both supercritical and subcritical pitchfork bifurcations in the timedepend...

Weakly Nonlinear Analysis of Vortex Formation in a Dissipative Variant of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation

For a dissipative variant of the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a parabolic trap under rotation, we study a symmetry breaking process that leads to the formation of vortices. The first symmetry breaking leads to the formation of many small vortices distributed uniformly near the Thomas-Fermi radius. The instability occurs as a result of a linear instability of a vortex-free stea...
